The Lower Mill Race

Race Street footbridge · Washington Ridge

Stand on the footbridge and look down. The narrow channel cut into the rock isn’t the creek — it’s the mill race the first settlers dug by hand in 1791 to pull water off the bend and run it past a wheel.

For a hundred years the sound of that wheel set the rhythm of the day. Families lived close enough to hear it stop — and when it stopped, everyone knew something was wrong upstream.

My grandfather crossed the bridge to the tannery before dawn every day. He said you could smell the work before you could see the water.
